Sandwich Harbour: soft sand, steep dunes, Atlantic wind, tyre tracks, tide timing, and a very clear reason not to bring the wrong car.
This short Wandering Africa video is from the 4×4 route south of Walvis Bay, where high dunes meet the Atlantic. No real road. Just sand, speed, bounce, and a driver who knows the terrain. Your car rental company would not let you try this yourself. Sensible people, those rental companies.
We went from Swakopmund through Walvis Bay and on to Sandwich Harbour. The dune driving is the obvious fun part. Then come the viewpoints: sand, ocean, bays, a few green patches, flamingos in the distance, tyre tracks across the dunes, and the odd web-footed desert gecko.
