Egypt, December 2004. This was one of the times I actually went fairly classic on the travel front. Luxor, a Nile cruise, Cairo, tourist hotels, the famous sights, the full Egypt greatest hits package. Not my usual style, but worth it.
This was a Christmas trip with my dear, beloved parents and my then-girlfriend, now-wife Beatrice. The first of many where we’d meet up for Christmas at some random new place in the world. Egypt is not as off the beaten track as the places we usually pick, but still one of those places you need to have seen.

I was already well used to Kenya and warmer African climates by then, so Egypt’s version of winter felt a bit unnecessary, but still OK. The upside was fewer tourists, which made the experience a lot more pleasant.

I took all of these pictures on a Canon IXUS 400, which felt pretty decent at the time. No fancy gear, no cinematic ambitions, just a compact camera and Egypt being outrageously photogenic.

Luxor was every bit as impressive as you would expect, and the Nile cruise, touristy as it was, had its moments.

Then there was Cairo. Fascinating, chaotic, and a phone that got stolen.
So yes, this gallery comes from a trip where I did a lot of the classic tourist stuff. Not my most typical style, even then, but one I am very glad I did.
